Rising Yen Makes Toyota Tougher
Toyota Motor Corp still expects to see a second-half recovery in industry-wide auto sales in North America, though tighter credit conditions have injected a note of uncertainty. More than 1.3 million have been sold worldwide and Toyota wants to sell a million per year after 2010. Toyota aims to double hybrid sales in Europe, now 10 percent of the total. A plug-in hybrid that can 'tank' from a power socket, tested with French electricity company EDF since September, will be sold to fleet customers in Europe by 2010.
More immediately, making cars smaller and lighter will also cut emissions. Toyota will unveil a production version of the iQ -- a very small city car -- in Geneva and a concept car 1/X that uses reinforced plastics for the body and has an engine one-third the size of a Prius engine, but similar performance. Toyota was continuing work to develop a low-cost vehicle -- not an ultra-low cost car such as the Nano of India's Tata Motors Ltd.
