Dell started-first Indian manufacturing unit
World's largest computer maker, Dell Inc started it's first manufacturing unit in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, with an initial investment of about $30 million spread over five years. The new facility would have an initial capacity of producing 40,000 desktop computers a year that constitute almost 75 per cent of the company's India business and then go on to make other products. The Chennai operation reaffirms the strategic importance of India to Dell.It provides significant impetus to their growth plans and prospects.
This plant would help the company to substantially reduce costs and delivery time for its customers. The India plant is the firm's third manufacturing location in the Asia-Pacific region, after China and Malaysia, and is part of Dell's global network of manufacturing facilities. The company marked the occasion by gifting it first ever India made desktop to Infosys, one of its largest clients in the country.
